As the Russian invasion of Ukraine reaches its 1,443rd day, diplomatic efforts have intensified in the United Arab Emirates. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed optimism that the ongoing US-led peace talks in Abu Dhabi will soon result in a fresh exchange of prisoners of war (POWs).
The talks, which entered their second day on Thursday, February 5, 2026, represent a significant push by the Trump administration to broker a settlement.
“Productive” Negotiations in Abu Dhabi
Ukraine’s lead negotiator, Rustem Umerov, described the initial sessions as “substantive and productive,” focusing on concrete steps rather than abstract promises. However, Zelenskyy warned in his nightly address that any agreement must ensure a real peace and not merely provide Russia with a “breather” to prolong the conflict.

Battlefield Toll: Ukraine Confirms 55,000 Fallen Soldiers
In a candid interview with French broadcaster France 2, President Zelenskyy provided a grim update on the war’s human cost. He confirmed that 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have officially been killed in action since the full-scale invasion began in 2022.
This figure marks a stark increase from the 46,000 deaths reported in February 2025. Zelenskyy emphasized that this number does not include the “large number” of personnel currently listed as missing.
Kremlin maintains “Hardline” Stance
Despite the progress in Abu Dhabi, the Kremlin’s rhetoric remains rigid. Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that while “the doors for a peaceful settlement are open,” Russian operations will continue until Kyiv accepts Moscow’s territorial conditions.
Key obstacles remain:
- Territorial Demands: Moscow insists on control over the Donbas.
- Security Guarantees: Russia explicitly rejects the presence of European or NATO troops on Ukrainian soil—a condition Kyiv views as non-negotiable for future safety.
Conflict Escalation: Cluster Munition Strike in Druzhkivka
While diplomats meet in the UAE, the violence on the ground continues to claim civilian lives. On Wednesday, a Russian Smerch MLRS attack using cluster munitions struck a busy market in the town of Druzhkivka (Donetsk region).
- Fatalities: 7 civilians (aged 43 to 81).
- Injuries: 15 wounded.
- Damage: 3 apartment buildings and several commercial pavilions destroyed.
Donetsk regional military chief Vadym Filashkin called the attack a “deliberate war crime,” noting that it makes Russian talk of a ceasefire feel “worthless.”
