New to Retinoids? A Dermatologist’s 3 Golden Rules for Safe & Effective Use

In the era of viral skincare reels and “shelfie” aesthetics, finding a routine that actually works can be overwhelming. While ingredients like salicylic acid and Vitamin C have their place, retinoids are the undisputed “holy grail” of dermatology.

Whether you are looking to treat stubborn acne or reduce fine lines, retinoids (derivatives of Vitamin A) are scientifically proven to promote collagen, regulate cell turnover, and fade hyperpigmentation. However, using them incorrectly can lead to “retinol burn” and skin sensitivity.

To help beginners, Dr. Gurveen Waraich (MBBS, MD) from Garekars MD Dermatology Clinics shares three essential rules for safely incorporating retinoids into your routine.

What Are Retinoids and Why Use Them?

Retinoids are a family of compounds derived from Vitamin A. They are highly effective because they work at a cellular level to:

  • Reduce Signs of Aging: Smoothing fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Clear Acne: Unclogging pores and reducing inflammation.
  • Even Skin Tone: Fading dark spots and evening out texture.
  • Exfoliate: Boosting the skin’s natural renewal process.

The 3 Golden Rules for Retinoid Beginners

Rule 1: Frequency Over Intensity (Don’t Use Daily)

The biggest mistake beginners make is jumping into daily application. Dr. Waraich explains that retinoids like retinol, retinal, or tretinoin should only be used 3 to 4 times a week at most.

“It’s a long game,” she advises. “It is best not to combine retinoids with other harsh actives in the same session.

Give your skin a night off to recover”

Rule 2: Master the “Sandwich Technique” (Moisturizer First?)

A common debate is whether to apply retinoids before or after moisturizer. Dr. Waraich suggests applying your retinoid after moisturizer if:

  1. You have naturally dry or sensitive skin.
  2. You are a first-time user.
  3. You are switching to a higher-strength variant. Once your skin builds tolerance, you can gradually switch to applying the retinoid directly to clean skin before moisturizing.

Rule 3: Less is Always More (The Pea-Sized Rule)

Contrary to what you see on social media, you do not need to “slug” your face in retinoids. Using too much won’t give you faster results; it will only cause irritation.

  • The Golden Ratio: Use a single pea-sized amount for your entire face.
  • Avoid the “influencer dot” method: Dabbing dozens of dots across the face often leads to over-application.

Summary: Patience is Key

Skincare doesn’t need to be a 10-step process. By introducing the right active ingredients like retinoids with a disciplined, dermatologist-backed approach, you can achieve professional results at home. Always remember to wear SPF 30 or higher during the day, as retinoids increase sun sensitivity!
