Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has revealed that the United States is pushing for a definitive end to the war with Russia by June 2026. In a significant diplomatic shift, both nations have been invited to the U.S. for a fresh round of high-level peace talks scheduled for next week.
Miami to Host Historic Trilateral Peace Talks
According to President Zelensky, the Trump administration has proposed that negotiating teams from Ukraine and Russia meet on American soil for the first time.
“America proposed for the first time that the two negotiating teams meet in the United States, probably in Miami, in a week. We confirmed our participation,” Zelensky stated during a press briefing on Saturday.
While Washington and Moscow have yet to issue official comments, the move aligns with President Donald Trump’s stated priority of resolving the nearly four-year conflict since his return to office over a year ago.
The “June Deadline”: Why the Summer Timeline Matters
When asked about the sudden urgency and the specific time frame, Zelensky noted that the U.S. aims to reach a comprehensive agreement before the summer.
- The Goal: A full resolution by June 2026.
- The “Why”: Zelensky suggested that “domestic issues in the US” are driving the schedule, likely referring to the upcoming congressional midterm elections in November.
- The Stalemate: Previous talks in Abu Dhabi ended on Friday without a breakthrough, as “difficult issues” regarding territorial concessions remain the primary hurdle.
Russia Targets Ukraine’s Energy Grid Amid Diplomacy
Despite the diplomatic push, the situation on the ground remains dire. Russia has intensified its strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, utilizing over 400 drones and 40 missiles in a single night.
Ukraine’s Energy Minister, Denys Shmyhal, confirmed that the attacks targeted:
- Distribution Substations: Disrupting the “backbone” of the national grid.
- Generation Facilities: Including the Dobrotvir power plant in the Lviv region.
- Regional Impact: Thousands remain without power in freezing conditions, forcing Ukraine to request emergency electricity from neighboring Poland.
