Will 40 Points Be Needed for Premier League Survival in 2026?

The “mythical” 40-point mark is back at the center of footballing conversation. As the 2025/26 Premier League season enters its final stretch, a resurgent West Ham United is dragging the mid-table into a chaotic relegation dogfight, suggesting that the survival threshold could be the highest we’ve seen in over a decade.

The Relegation Landscape: Sackings at Spurs and Forest

The pressure of the drop has already claimed two major managerial casualties this week.

  • Tottenham Hotspur sensationally sacked Thomas Frank on Wednesday following a 2-1 home defeat to Newcastle. Despite their European success, Spurs sit in a precarious 16th place with just 29 points from 26 matches.
  • Nottingham Forest followed suit, dismissing Sean Dyche after a goalless draw with bottom-side Wolves. Forest currently occupies 17th place (27 points), sitting just three points above the relegation zone.

West Ham’s Resurgence Under Nuno Espírito Santo

While the teams above them are faltering, West Ham (18th) is the form team in the bottom three. Under the guidance of Nuno Espírito Santo, the Hammers have picked up 10 points from their last five games, including a gutsy 1-1 draw against high-flying Manchester United on February 10.

With 24 points from 26 games, West Ham’s current tally is the highest for an 18th-placed team at this stage in years. If the Hammers maintain their trajectory, 17th-placed teams may well need to breach the 38-to-40 point barrier to secure safety.

The Survival Math: History vs. 2026 Reality

For years, the “safety mark” has been much lower than 40. In 2024, only 32 points were needed for survival. However, 2026 feels like a throwback to the 2002/03 season, where West Ham famously went down with a record 42 points.

The “Danger Zone” Teams

It isn’t just the bottom three looking over their shoulders. Brighton (31 points) and Crystal Palace (32 points) are on dismal runs, with the Seagulls winning just one game since late November. With 12 games remaining, any club under 35 points is mathematically in danger of a late-season collapse.
