PALM BEACH, FLORIDA - DECEMBER 16: U.S. President-elect Donald Trump speaks at a news conference at Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort on December 16, 2024 in Palm Beach, Florida. In a news conference that went over an hour, Trump announced that SoftBank will invest over $100 billion in projects in the United States including 100,000 artificial intelligence related jobs and then took questions on Syria, Israel, Ukraine, the economy, cabinet picks, and many other topics. At the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, the Trump administration officially inaugurated the Board of Peace.” While the name suggests a diplomatic breakthrough, the presentation led by Jared Kushner has sparked intense international debate over the future of the Gaza Strip and the sovereignty of the Palestinian people.

The $25 Billion Luxury Vision for Gaza

Jared Kushner’s proposal reimagines the besieged Gaza Strip not as a self-governed territory, but as a high-end seaside destination. The plan includes:

  • Massive Infrastructure: Gleaming skyscrapers and entirely new urban centers.
  • The Price Tag: An estimated investment of at least $25 billion.
  • Zoning Maps: Detailed layouts dividing the territory into specific development zones.

While the “Board of Peace” touts economic prosperity, critics point out the glaring disconnect between this “upscale resort” vision and the current reality on the ground. Palestinians in Gaza are currently facing a humanitarian crisis, struggling to find food and shelter amid ongoing restrictions on aid.

“A Parody of a Colonial Body”

The international response to the Davos presentation has been polarizing. Sharif Abdel Kouddous, Middle East and North Africa editor at Drop Site News, offered a scathing critique of the board’s legitimacy.

“It’s hard to take these people seriously. I mean, they’re buffoonish. But the problem is, is that they control the largest military and economy in the world,” Kouddous stated.

He further characterized the Board of Peace as a “parody of a colonial body,” arguing that the proposed development plan effectively erases Palestinians from their own governance. Instead of self-determination, Kouddous warns that the plan leads to the “ultimate control and subjugation” of the Palestinian population.

Humanitarian Concerns vs. Real Estate Development

The controversy highlights a fundamental divide in Middle East policy. The Trump administration’s approach prioritizes economic normalization and real estate development, while human rights organizations emphasize the need for humanitarian aid and political representation for the millions of Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip.

As the “Board of Peace” moves forward, the global community remains divided on whether this represents a path to stability or a final erasure of Palestinian autonomy in Gaza.
